Carla joined Sara at the front door of the small, detached house on the edge of the estate. A tractor had held them up, blocking the entrance, and the farmer had taken a fair bit of persuading to move. Carla had jumped out of the car, flashed her ID at the man, who’d apologised and tipped his cap at her, then he made out he hadn’t seen them trying to enter the estate.

“Jumped-up fucker. You could tell he hated speaking to a female officer,” Carla complained under her breath.

Sara rang the bell. “Takes all sorts to make up this world of ours. Chauvinistic pigs like that must make up about forty percent.”

Carla laughed. “God, I hope not. If it’s true, that’s a massive proportion.”

Sara grinned. “Did I tell you maths was my worst subject at school?”

The door opened, putting an end to their conversation.

“Hello, Mrs Brown?”

The woman, who was in her mid-fifties, peered over her shoulder and called out, “Emily, I think it’s the police.”

A younger woman in her early thirties appeared beside Mrs Brown. “Are you?”

“Yes, that’s right. I’m DI Sara Ramsey, and this is my partner, DS Carla Jameson. Would it be possible for us to come in and have a chat with you?”

“Have you found him? My father?”

“Let them in,” Mrs Brown said. “Stop hounding them on the doorstep. I don’t want the neighbours hearing what they have to say.”

“I asked a simple question, Mum, that’s all. You’d better come in.”

Mrs Brown and her daughter led them into a large, open-plan kitchen-cum-living room at the rear of the property, which overlooked a stunning back garden full of colour, despite the time of year.

“Can we offer you a drink?” Mrs Brown asked. She sat on one of the stools at the kitchen island and invited Sara and Carla to do the same.

“Not for us, thank you,” Sara replied. She inhaled a breath to calm her racing pulse. This was still one of the worst tasks her job involved. The more she did it, the worst it got.

“Well? Have you found him?” Emily said in a panicked tone.

“I’m sorry to have to inform you that we believe Mr Brown’s body was found earlier this morning.”

Sara watched the colour drain from Mrs Brown’s face.

Her daughter instantly burst into tears. “No, this can’t be right, not my father, he can’t be dead.”

Her mother reached for her hand and gathered it in her own. Emily hugged her mother, and her crying turned into sobbing. Mrs Brown gave Sara the impression that she was stunned by the news but adamant she was going to hold it together for the sake of her daughter.

“Where? Did he have an accident?” Mrs Brown asked.

“In a remote spot, near the woods, out at Lower Lyde,” Sara replied.

The two women stared at each other.

“Why there?” Emily said. “Do we know anyone who lives out that way, Mum?”

“I was about to ask you the same, darling. I can’t think of anyone, no one at all. Not unless someone who your father knows has recently moved out that way, and he forgot to tell me.
